BroadBand Outage

Lyndon township lost broadband service at Approximately 5:15pm on Saturday, March 4
Cause of outage is fiber cut at Lima Center and Old US 12

Recent snow events have caused several fiber outages.  Fiber splicing crews are in high demand.  Crews will be on site at 9:00am Sunday for repairs.

Update – Sunday, March 5 , 12:20pm

Crews have communicated the issue is a hot electric line on the fiber.  DTE is onsite replacing poles and they are reporting it may be tomorrow before fiber crews can begin work.

Update – Sunday March 5,  3:24pm
From: MEC

Heavy winds caused significant damage to a DTE Energy utility poles and power line along Jackson Rd near Steinbacher Rd. DTE crews are working on it now. However, 6,000 feet of fiber line will need to be replaced, and fiber crews cannot begin work until Monday, March 6. We apologize for the for the inconvenience; we expect restoration sometime on March 6.

Update Monday March 6, 12:29
From:MEC

Fiber crews are hard at work on replacing lines. It was originally estimated that they would need to replace 6,000 feet of fiber, however crews determined this morning that only 2,500 to 3,000 feet need replacement. Unfortunately, much of this is in marshy areas and they are having trouble getting to the lines to work on them. We do not have an ETR at this time.

We have heard some customers asking why an outage occurred when fiber lines were installed underground. While underground fiber lines are less susceptible to weather damage, an outage can still occur if there are problems further down the line with equipment not owned by Lyndon Township or MEC. This is what happened this weekend, when heavy snow and falling trees caused significant damage to a DTE Energy-owned utility pole and power line in Lima Township (in the area pictured below).

We apologize for the inconvenience and will send an update when we know more.

Update Moonday, March 6 5:22pm

Thank you for your patience. We expect restoration by 9 pm. We understand that this extended outage has been frustrating. However, the damage was significant, and the marshy terrain was challenging.

Splicers are currently working on one end of the cable, while additional crews are working diligently on the other end of the damaged section.

A number of you have asked for more information on what happened and why the restoration is taking so long.  Attached are some images of the damaged fiber that was found by crews after DTE completed repairing the electric lines and poles holding the fiber which delivers service to the township from Ann Arbor.  Also included are pictures of the conditions that crews are battling to get service restored as quickly as possible.

Update Monday, March 9;22pm

The upstream carrier reports that they have completed splicing the repaired cable however we are not seeing the circuit into the township come up yet.  We dispatched a tech to the township hall cabinet and found we are receiving light on both the transmit and receive strands of fiber from the upstream carrier to Ann Arbor.  This points to a mistake made by the upstream carriers splicing crews of UCI.  UCI splicers are back at the repaired cable to double checking their work.  We would anticipate a correction to be completed in 1 hour.
