How to Test Your Well

Having your well record is important for maintaining your well and knowing what its last tests revealed. You can look on the EGLE Well Water Viewer. The image below shows all the wells that have records in and near Lyndon Township. You can use EGLE Well Water Viewer to find if there are also any previous records for your well!

“A well record is the key piece of information that initiates the water supply approval process. Once the well record is received, the local health department can perform a final inspection and ensure water samples are collected.” — EGLE

You can get one from the Washtenaw County Health Department by emailing zeebcss@washtenaw.org or calling 734-222-3800. The Environmental Health Division Office has several tests available.

Collect your water sample and fill out the sampling form to complete the test.

Note: In Washtenaw county you must purchase special sample bottles to collect the water sample. You cannot bring water in a jar or other container from home, as it will not be able to be tested!

  • County staff will give you instructions on how to collect the sample when you request a test.
  • Once the water sample bottles are filled at home, you need to return them to the Health Department office.

To purchase water sample bottles, stop by the office at 705 N Zeeb Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. Office hours are 8:30 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday. They close from noon to 1 pm daily for lunch. You do not need to call ahead or make an appointment.

When returning the sample,

  • Return water samples by 3 pm, Monday through Friday, so their lab can pick it up the same day.
  • Bring it to the same office at 705 N Zeeb Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.
  • Attach completed forms to each bottle and place them in the small black refrigerator in the lobby.
  • Do not put water samples in the drop box located outside or leave them on the tables in the lobby!

It is best to fill the sample bottles and return them the same day. For best results, keep the bottles chilled after collection and during transport to our office.

Turn-around times for test results vary. If a result is unsafe, they will call you. They should send a copy of all sample results to you via email or mail.

Even if you feel you understand the test results well, by visiting Be Well Informed and entering your test results, you can find out whether they meet the Michigan standards for water quality.

This site analyzes your results for free and provides next steps in the case you find a contaminant that is too high.

The department of Great Lakes and Energy recommends that you contact your local health department if you have specific questions about your results. You can contact the Washtenaw County Health department by emailing zeebcss@washtenaw.org or calling 734-222-3800.
